Something Fun is Coming: Hurry the Hurricane!

After more than 20 years of living in South Florida, I’ve experienced my fair share of hurricanes. Every time a storm approached, I noticed a familiar pattern: adults went into action mode — gathering supplies, checking forecasts, and securing their homes — while many children looked on, unsure about what was happening or why.

As someone who’s spent my career supporting children’s emotional and developmental growth, I began writing short “social stories” to help explain what hurricanes are, what to expect, and how to feel safe during them. Over the years, these stories became a trusted tool — especially for autistic children, who often benefit from clear, visual, and predictable explanations to help make sense of change.

One story, in particular, stood out: Hurry the Hurricane. Hurry brought a friendly, non-scary voice to something that can feel overwhelming, helping kids understand that while we can’t control the weather, we can control how we prepare, respond, and stay connected through it.

I’m thrilled to share that Hurry the Hurricane will soon be a real book, published by Blue Balloon Books! 🌪️💙 It’s a dream come true and one that feels especially meaningful knowing how many children — both neurotypical and autistic — can benefit from this kind of support.

Hurry the Hurricane will be released just in time for next year’s hurricane season, offering families, educators, and caregivers a way to talk about storms in a reassuring, empowering way.

I’ll be sharing more updates as we get closer to publication — from sneak peeks of the illustrations to details on where you can find Hurry once it’s out in the world. 💛

Thank you to everyone who’s encouraged this project along the way. I can’t wait for you to meet Hurry!
